PROGRAM NOTES
The marimba, especially as a solo instrument, is often overlooked
in its potential to be "fun", both to play and to hear.
It is then perceived either as a serious academic instrument,
frequently associated with difficult, cerebral music, or as a
mellow-sounding vehicle for transcriptions of music written for
other instruments. In writing "Balletti di Bronzo",
(which means "Ballets of Bronze" in Italian), my third
work for solo marimba, I wanted both the performer and the listeners
(as well as the composer) to have some fun. The title refers
to the influence that various dance forms had on the piece, while
it is also an affectionate homage to a rather obscure cult band
of early Seventies Italian progressive rock. The first movement,
"Shake your booty" is fast and hectic, highlighting
the speed of the performer. The second, "Waltz and Variations",
is a set of increasingly abstract variations on a tonal theme.
The third, "Festive Fun", is just what the title suggests,
with occasional detours to a more melancholy mood. The fourth,
"Bossango", starts as a bossa nova and then transforms
into a tango, with its typical languid moods. The work was commissioned
by and is dedicated to Brian Fronzaglia.
Nell'accingermi a scrivere "Balletti
invece enfatizzare l'elemento ludico.
"Shake your booty" (che nell'inglese americano vuol
dire piu' o meno "muovi quel sedere" e fa parte dello
slang delle discoteche) e' veloce e mozzafiato e mette in mostra
la velocita' dell'esecutore. Il secondo, "Waltz and Variations",
momentanea verso stati d'animo piu' melanconici.
