This little sinfonia for Archlute or Theorbo and low stringts in Fuxian counterpoint has a Ukrainian folk song "A Vzhe 200 Rokiv Jak Kozak v Nevoli" (200 years have passed for the Cossack in captivity) in its Cantus Firmus). The title refers to a book of essays by Zbigniew Herbert entitled "The Barbarian in the Garden", as well as the composer's erstwhile collaborations with the lutenist Luca Pianca, one of the founders of Il Giardino Armonico and a couple of forbidden intervas hidden in the score.
